Don't let your feelings suppress success

In the journey toward achieving our goals, it’s all too easy to let our feelings dictate our actions. We’ve all had those days when we don’t feel like prospecting, networking, or taking the necessary steps to set ourselves up for success. Maybe the thought of having a difficult conversation makes you want to retreat into your comfort zone. But here’s the truth: we need to push through those feelings, as they often stand in the way of our progress.

The Relationship Between Behavior and Attitude

One key principle to remember is that behavior creates attitude, not the other way around. It’s easy to think that we need to feel motivated, excited, or ready before we take action. However, often it’s the act of doing that sparks the motivation we seek. When we engage in the behaviors that lead to success, we cultivate a positive mindset that propels us forward.

Breaking Through the Comfort Zone

Here are a few strategies to help you push past your feelings and engage in the success behaviors that will help you reach your goals:

  1. Set Small, Achievable Goals: When faced with the reluctance to take action, break down your tasks into smaller, manageable steps. If networking feels overwhelming, commit to reaching out to just one new contact each day. Small wins can lead to bigger accomplishments and help build momentum.

  2. Establish a Routine: Consistency is key when it comes to forming new habits. Create a routine that incorporates success behaviors into your daily life. By making these actions a regular part of your day, you’ll find it easier to push through feelings of resistance.

  3. Remind Yourself of Your ‘Why’: When motivation wanes, take a moment to reconnect with your purpose. Remind yourself why you set your goals in the first place. Keeping your ‘why’ at the forefront of your mind can provide the push you need to act, even when you don’t feel like it.

  4. Practice Accountability: Surround yourself with a support system that holds you accountable. Share your goals with a trusted friend or mentor who can encourage you to take action, even when your feelings try to hold you back.

Take the Challenge

So, I want to challenge you: the next time you find yourself resisting a necessary action, pause and ask yourself, “What behavior can I engage in right now that will help me move closer to my goals?” Even when you don’t feel like it, commit to doing that success behavior.

Remember, your feelings are valid, but they don’t have to control your actions. By taking consistent, intentional steps, you’ll pave the way for success and growth.
